Eco-Friendly
Country Guesthouse Schonegg is a AAA Touring Green Star-rated property. We take our environmental responsibilities seriously. Here is a summary of our eco-friendly initiatives.
Design
The guesthouse features solar-passive design and is based on concept drawings developed by TT Architecture, one of the region’s most renowned eco-friendly architecture firms.
- Northern orientation
- Double glazed windows and sliding doors
- Slab, wall, ceiling and roof insulation
- 450 mm eaves to optimize shade in summer and sunlight penetration in winter
Water
With no external water supply, all potable water at Schonegg is rainwater, supplemented during dry spells by water cartage. Drinking water is filtered through 1 micron and UV filters. Waste water is treated on site using microbiological processes. Water is heated using 4 high-efficiency instantaneous gas hot water units. A sophisticated hot water loop, fitted with pump and timer, ensures hot water is delivered to all rooms efficiently with minimal wastage of water or gas.
Lighting
External lighting is on a timer system. All light globe are high-efficiency power saving units.
Climate Control
Heating and cooling are delivered to most guest rooms and public spaces via energy-efficient Daikin inverter air conditioners. The dining area and Rooms 5 & 6 are heated using eletric in-slab heating.
Recycling
We operate an extensive recycling program.
- Green waste goes to our very grateful chickens
- Paper and card, glass, plastic and metals are sorted and recycled.
Extensive use has been made of recycled materials including recycled Jarrah timber for our breezeway, recycled hardwood in our restaurant terrace beams, recycled paving for our restaurant terrace and recycled bluestone in our vegeable garden walls.
Free Range Eggs
We only use free range eggs at Schonegg and have signed on to the RSPCA’s ‘Choose Wisely’ campaign to promote the use of cage-free eggs.
