We have a very good friend from Germany who is now working in Australia. He is an avid blogger. Here is the link to Martin’s Aussie Blog.
Martin stayed with us on a couple of occasions last year, search his blog for Schonegg posts to get an ‘insiders view’ of life with us!
Whilst he was with us, our son Mathias Photoshopped a picture of our whippet Libby which Martin posted on his blog.

Libby the Whippet relaxes at Schonegg
As you can see, even pets have a great stay with us.
If you travel with your pet, we are one of the few accommodation providers that will welcome you. We have two pet friendly rooms, check our Room Rates page for details.
We’d love to hear from you, the only person who loves a comment more than me is Martin, so when you have visited his blog leave him a comment too!

Everyone seems keen to share their New Year’s Resolutions - so here we go!
Focus on the Guesthouse
Many of you will be aware we have cut back on function catering to focus our energies on providing first class guesthouse accommodation and meals. Our occupancy levels have grown and we now serve dinner to our guests five nights a week (Wednesday to Sunday), this is keeping us busy enough, thank you!
Work/Life Balance
As noted above, with our focus on the guesthouse we are better placed to achieve that elusive ‘work/life balance’. For us this means spending time with the kids, walking the dog and getting to the gym twice a week. We’re loving it!
Your Resolutions?
We hope you have had some success in achieving your New Year’s Resolutions. Some tips – keep them achievable, write them down and stick them somewhere visible like the fridge or bathroom mirror.
If you too are keen for some balance in your life, you might pencil in a couple of days away from the ratrace – just 24 or 48 hours is often enough to achieve long term benefits and a renewed zest for live. Sounds like time well spent to me…. obvioulsy we’d love to help with some great accommodation in a peaceful rural setting.
Any other resolutions you’d like to share.. please leave a comment.
Cheers,
Richard

We have just prepared a delicious dinner featuring a most versatile ingredient – the humble chook!
Katja has a recipe folder of favorites – today we dug out her ‘Cornflake Chicken’ recipe. We decided it was better than Colonel Sander’s recipe and worthy of its own franchise. We then added a few more chicken favorites to the menu…
Cornflake Chicken Katja’s way..
Cut skinless chicken breast or thigh into strips. Prepare your coatings – first flour, then egg, then crushed corn flakes. Katja makes a few additions to the basic recipe. Add crushed garlic and soy sauce to the egg mix and some breadcrumbs and chili flakes to the corn flakes.
Deep fry on 170 C until just cooked through. Alternatively, seal chicken by shallow frying in a fry pan before finishing in the oven.
Zesty Chicken
Finely chop the skin of a preserved lemon (prepare your own or grab a jar from the deli section). Place a teaspoon of this mixture under the skin of a chicken breast. Seal the chicken to colour the skin. Top each breast with a generous heap of dukkah mix before roasting in a moderate oven.
Chicken with Honey Macadamia Nut Crumble, Orange Chili Cream Sauce
(Taken from a previous Schonegg menu)
Sauce
Reduce 500 ml fresh orange juice by 1/2. Add 250 ml cream, 250 ml chicken stock and 1 tbsp chili flakes and reduce until a creamy consistency. Correct the seasoning.
Crumble
Roughly chop macadamia nuts and roast until golden. Add a little honey, salt and pepper and return to the oven for 1 minute. Toss well and turn out to cool on baking paper. Once cool and crunchy you can chop more finely or leave ‘chunky’.
Seal chicken breast (skin on) and roast until just cooked (we hate dry chicken!). Serve with a generous portion of sauce, topped with nut crumble.

We borrowed this link from our friend Martin’s blog. The video shows a unique perspective of Sydney and a new and innovative form of photography.
Which is a nice segway to our latest news at Schonegg – new digital art on display. Our friend Steve Hazael has just delivered some of his current work – amazing images of Australian bush. Check his website for more on Steve, or better yet – come and visit us.

We make sure that when we get constructive feedback from our guests, we act on it.
The Ultimate Gourmet Package was inspired by a suggestion from a recent guest who fell in love with all that our great region has to offer and asked how she could learn more.
What to expect…
Arrive Tuesday afternoon, settle in and then enjoy a blind tasting of local sparkling versus French Champagne – will you spot the import? Dinner will be a casual affair – platters of local produce shared with your fellow gourmands.
After an indulgent breakfast on Wednesday morning, we’re off to explore the region – Robyn Rowe’s multi-award winning chocolates, Poacher’s Pantry smoked produce and one or two of Australia’s premium cool-climate wineries. Dinner will be a la carte – fine dining Schonegg-style.
On Thursday we meet ‘The Makers of Murrumbateman’ – an association of talented producers. We’ll rub shoulders with the beautiful Belted Galloway cattle of Honeypot Farm, just across the road from Schonegg, discuss the finer points of honey production and savour extra virgin olive oils. Round another memorable day out with a 5-Course degustation dinner with local wines matched per course.
Package cost, per person $ 695, includes 3 nights twin share – dinner, bed and breakfast. Call for detailed inclusions. Minimum 6 people per package so call your friends!

Recently we were visited by a Citroen SM and it’s proud owners. The vehicle was on its first big ‘journey’ after 12 years of restoration. The vehicle is the ‘lovechild’ of a marriage between the refined French auto firm Citroen and the Italian supercar manufacturer Maserati. Citroen commissioned the design to compete in the prestigious GT racing circuit im the early 1970’s.
As you can see, the car is quite a sight to behold – a morphing of the regal Citroen Palais and the raw power of a Maserati. The real magic lies beneath the bonnet. This vehicle had the top of the range 3 lt Masserati engine surrounded by hydraulic systems that remain ’state of the art’ today. The car is believed to be the fastest fro
nt wheel production vehicle ever made and has (so I”m told) gravity defying suspension and ride.
Clearly a unique classic. Thankyou Donna and Marvin for sharing!.

We have been working hard to produce a new brochure for the New Year. We have gone for something a bit different – with the aim of capturing a bit more of the ‘moods’ of Schonegg rather than just the facts and figures. Click here for a peek Schonegg Brochure 2010- the printed version is being produced on 100 % recycled paper with organic inks and a lovely matt lacquer finish – we can’t wait to get our hands on them!
We’d love to hear your feedback. Please leave a comment.

We were approached earlier in 2009 to be a part of Smartbox, the gift in a box. The idea is that you buy a gift box which contains a selection of gift ideas and a voucher. The recipient selects their favorite, books and enjoys. Sounds like a great idea to me. A recent arrival to Australia, Smartbox has its origins in France but is now an international product.
Find out more about Smartbox, and our great ‘Wineries Getaway’ at www.smartbox.com.au
You will find Smartbox products at Myer stores and Dimmocks bookshops.
