Katja’s Christmas Marketplace

Many years ago, when Evelyn was just a teenager, she created an entire village out of gingerbread. Word spread about her amazing feat and soon the story featured on the front page of her local newspaper. Now, 33 years later, our talented daughter Katja has recreated the village using the same recipe and templates. Naturally, we are very proud of her patience and dedication. If you are planning to spend some time at Schonegg in the next couple of weeks, we promise you’ll be even more impressed when you see her creation ‘live’, you may even get to taste a sample.

In the meantime, feel free to share a story about your talented children.

Cheers,

Richard

Have You Been Wrapt In Winter Yet?

The clever people at Australian Capital Tourism worked out that winter is a great time to visit our region and created ‘Wrapt In Winter’ to let everyone know.

We’ve joined in with our own Wrapt In Winter packages. Stay mid-week and enjoy all that’s good about winter. Your winter experience begins with a welcoming flask of Evelyn’s famous Gluhwien (mulled wine) and a plate of fresh-baked gingerbread cookies. Of course later in the evening we will be serving a glass of premium local wine and canapes in front of the fire.

Included in your package is a sumptuous continental breakfast buffet featuring fresh-baked breads, home made jams and complimentary sparkling wine AND an a la carte cooked breakfast. But wait.. you even get to keep the stainless steel flask and mugs.

Find out more by visiting our ‘Specials and Packages’ page. or book online here.

Fireside Festival 2011

It’s cold outside… -4 C tonight!

The good news is that the woodheap is stacked high and the fire is glowing in the guest lounge. And your fluffy doona is extra snuggly, bathrobes ultra-fluffy… we’re ready to offer you the ultimate winter experience!

If that’s not enough, we’ve even arranged a festival for you! The Fireside Festival 2011 will be the biggest, and warmest, yet.

A Tradition Is Born

We always love a celebration, but today we witnessed a tradition that was new to us that we would love to share with you.

Last night, as we served canapes in the guest lounge (in front of a lovely glowing fire), Janelle and Jason ‘warned us’ that they were planning on dressing up for breakfast.

You can imagine our delight when they arrived for breakfast in their full wedding outfits – Janelle glowing and shimmering (yes, she did both!) in her lovely flowing wedding dress with train and Jason in his snappy suit.

They told us they have relived their wedding day on each of their 6 anniversaries. We love it. As Janelle pointed out, her dress is too beautiful not to be worn at least once a year… and she continues to look wonderful.

If you like the idea,  we welcome you to join the tradition. Brides, grooms and those reliving this happy day are part of what makes Schonegg such a special place.

The Dating Divas

The Dating Divas

I stumbled across The Dating Diva’s Blog (don’t ask me how!).

Whilst oozing American kitsch on every page, it does send a good message. The diva’s motto is ‘Strengthening marriages, one date at a time’.

As I understand it, they set aside one night each week as ‘date night’ and do something nice for their husbands. Whilst this may sound a little one-sided, I did read one comment that interested me.. ‘everything I give, I get back ten-fold’.

As I said, some (most) of it is pretty OTT (over the top), but it’s a cool idea and, with the pace of life accelerating daily, it’s more important than ever that we plan some time for the special things in life, like your relationship.

We’d love to hear what you thing of The Dating Diva’s and, more importantly, we encourage you to share your ideas on how you ‘keep the magic’ in your relationship. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, we can think of at least one way of saying ‘I love you’… a night at Schonegg.

Looking forward to your comments.

Australia’s Hidden Gems

Want To Know A Secret? Australia’s Hidden Gems

Want to Know A Secret

We were chuffed to discover that Murrumbateman has been included in The Sunday Telegraph’s revelation of Australia’s hidden gems. (Sunday Telegraph Escape, Sunday 23 January 2011)

As one of a select list of just 8 destinations, we feel justifiably proud.

Journalist Angela Saurine says of her hidden gems  ‘We’ve all heard of Uluru, Kakadu and The Great Barrier Reef, but Australia has thousands of hidden gems that could lead to a holiday which is just as satisfying – if not more so.’

Describing Murrumbateman she says ‘The relaxed village has a strong community atmosphere with more than 20 wineries, many with cellar doors, as well as a growing number of cafes, restaurants and B&B’s’.

Here is the full list:

Murrumbateman Wine Region, NSW

Diamond Head, Crowdy Bay, NSW

Coconut Island, QLD

Aspley Gorge, TAS

Port Fairy, VIC

Southern Yorke Peninsula, SA

Umbrawarra Gorge Nature Park, NT

William Bay National Park, WA

Beach Party!

Our neighbour and friend Fiona Wholohan from Yarrh Wines dropped in with a lovely New Year’s Gift (a couple of bottles of award-winning 2009 Riesling – yay!). She reminded us that they will be hosting their annual beach party tomorrow, Sunday 2 Jan 2011. The event, DowntheCoast@Yarrh, is a big hit each year with prizes for all who attend dressed in their favourite beach gear. There will be great food, live music and of course, wonderful Yarrh wine.

Sounds like a great way to start the year. Click here for detail.

Cheers!

Happy New Year

We had a lovely night last night and started the New Year feeling great and full of anticipation that it will be our best yet. We hope you feel the same way.

I heard a snippet of a speech by a certain politician who suggested we should all make the most of the advantages that our country offers us and I thought that was good advice. It’s easy to find fault, but we really do have a wonderful home and life is far more fun when we look on the bright side.

Enough introspection, time to prepare for our yummy BBQ dinner tonight.

May 2011 be good to you and your family.

Best wishes from Evelyn and Richard

Merry Christmas

Evelyn, Katja, Mathias and I wish you and your families all a very Merry Christmas. We hope you are enjoying the festive season and wish you all the best for 2011.

We look forward to welcoming you to Schonegg soon.
